Natural gas-fired generation is a responsive, reliable energy source that uses natural gas to drive turbines that generate electricity. Our facilities can respond almost instantly to changes in demand – ramping up during peak hours or scaling back when renewable generation increases. This flexibility makes natural gas a critical resource in maintaining grid reliability, ensuring essential services like hospitals, schools, and businesses have uninterrupted power as global energy transition efforts continue.
Our Thorold Cogeneration Station in Ontario has delivered over 15 years of stable, efficient power generation. Commissioned in 2010, the facility maximizes efficiency while delivering reliable energy to the grid. Thorold continues to generate consistent cash flows and is a time-tested asset.
Northland operates two natural gas generating facilities in Saskatchewan: the 275 MW North Battleford Generating Station, providing reliable baseload power for approximately 250,000 homes, and the 86 MW Spy Hill Generating Station, supplying rapid-response power when needed. Both operate under long-term contracts with SaskPower, delivering stable cash flows. Together, they showcase Northland’s expertise in operating efficient and dependable natural gas assets.
